What better way to start your day than joining one of our ‘power breakfast’ sessions- networking breakfasts at which important discussions will be held about shaping key elements of our research culture? Something for everyone, these three interactive “power breakfast” sessions will take place at the cafeteria “Oliveri” at the CECAD research center, just across the street (200m) from the main venue.

Scientific research is at the heart of what we do, but how we do it and with whom are changing with the shifting culture of research. Continuing challenges exist including researcher career structures, publishing, reward structures, research integrity and diversity that raise questions over the culture of research in our cilia field. We want to give the forum to discuss these important topics including:

Wednesday, 7. October 2020:
Early Career Researcher- how to survive the scheme: Is research is a pyramid scheme, with students on the bottom, post-docs slightly higher and professors at the top? Here, only a tiny fraction of those at the bottom will make it to the top. Moving up the pyramid at the early career researcher (ECR) stage is particularly problematic. The uncertainty, lack of security and ‘publish or perish’ model on can make the transition to independence particularly stressful. It is often a serious deterrent to good people staying in research. We will discuss resources and networks that can help.

Thursday, 8. October 2020:
Diversity and Inclusion in Science: We will challenge participants to think creatively about how the culture of research could be different and opportunities to include more people from different backgrounds. We will brainstorm for examples that are working and where policies and practices that could be improved, exploring ideas we have to make a change.

Friday, 9. October 2020:
Developing cilia and ciliopathy research networks: This workshop will aim to develop new networks with individuals from across different research, clinical and patient communities from across Europe to work together to move ideas forward.

We will select facilitators for these events, which will run as discussion groups, as well as networking opportunities. Come along for the caffeine and be part of shaping our community’s research culture!
